About us
Lanka Lions Cricket Club (aka Lions Cricket Canberra) is a non-profit organization originally established as Canberra Lions in 1988 by a group of passionate Sri Lankan-Australians who wanted to form a cricket club carrying a Sri Lankan identity at a time the Sri Lankan national team was trying to establish itself as a competitive force in international cricket. Since then, Lions have been a key member of the Canberra City and Suburban Cricket Association (CCSCA) family for the last 35+ years fielding teams in various grades and winning the competition quite a few times.
While the club provided a platform for Sri Lankans living in Canberra, it was always open for the wider Canberra community to share the spirit of cricket and enjoy the game of cricket together. This has been a key feature for Lions providing members the opportunity to forge new friendships and better integration with various communities. This also allows members of non-Sri Lankan backgrounds to enjoy various club social events and, in most cases, enjoy some authentic Sri Lanka food.
Lions began with one team in 1988 and then fielded 2 teams in the 1990s. In 2009, Lions expanded its presence to three teams and has been growing ever since. Currently, we field 5 teams varying from 1st grade to 6th grade. Lions have maintained a team in 1st grade in CCSCA since the beginning which is something we take a lot of pride in.
